poco f2 launch

First of all let’s clear the confusion in the air, Xiaomi recently announced Redmi K30 Ultra in their 10th anniversary event which is speculated to be launched as POCO F2 in global markets including INDIA. Backing these speculations are 2 things –

  1. Recent history of POCO rebranding Redmi products and launching them outside of China (Redmi K30 as POCO X2, Redmi K30 PRO as POCO F2 PRO)
  2. Secondly POCO India’s general manager had stated in recent interviews and tweets that they would be rebranding XIAOMI phones if they found them perfect and a while back he stated that POCO won’t be using top of the line Snapdragon processors due to their expensive pricing instead they would be going with flagship processors by Mediatek (which in this case is Mediatek Dimensity 1000+).

For more details on the possible upcoming POCO F2 keep reading the article .

OVERVIEW

This is a great value for money device, having top of the line Mediatek Dimensity 1000+, 120 Hz Super Amoled, 64MP quad cameras and a super aggressive pricing (at least in China). On the side of K30 pro or POCO F2 pro this device sounds like a downgrade in terms of raw power but it gets a huge upgrade in the display department with introduction of 120Hz as 60 Hz in POCO F2 pro was a real bummer in 2020.

PROCESSOR

This could be the most controversial part about this device as in why Redmi (Xiaomi) went with Mediatek instead of choosing any upper midrange Snapdragon processor? This question arises because Mediatek hasn’t yet been able to establish a faith in the flagship or upper midrange category of processors, their processors were mainly used in mid rangers but with Dimensity series they are on the track to dethrone Qualcomm from the upper midrange market.

Mediatek Dimensity 1000+

Comparing Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with Dimensity 1000+ doesn’t make sense as Qualcomm’s counter part is way ahead of Mediatek. But if Qualcomm’s current best mid ranger Snapdragon 765G is compared head to head with Dimensity 1000+, Dimensity leaves Snapdragon 765G behind in almost all benchmarks, whether it is in GPU, CPU or in AI department. But the long term usability still remains a question mark on the Mediatek front. For the time being Mediatek is no longer the old Mediatek whose processors would heat and cause problems in the long run.

DISPLAY

The biggest downside of Redmi K30 PRO or the POCO F2 Pro was the display, it had a refresh rate of 60 Hertz which is not considered up to the mark in 2020. With this device, Xiaomi has fixed this issue without changing the display type which still remains to be Super Amoled, but with a high refresh rate of 120HZ which makes everything smooth throughout the UI.

On the specs side it has a 6.67 Super Amoled full screen (no notch or punch hole) FULL HD+ display having 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1200 nits. The reason behind the full view display is that the front camera is hidden in the popup mechanism. I in particular prefer pop up front camera over the notches though it might hurt the IP ratings of the device.

With HDR 10+ certification and no obstruction display it offers great media watching experience and the higher refresh rate makes gaming experience exceptional (only if the game supports high refresh rate).

CAMERAS

Poco F2 pro already had a decent 64MP quad camera system that’s why Xiaomi didn’t change that in the Redmi K30 Ultra.

First, let’s talk about the rear camera system. Starting with the main camera i.e. 64MP Sony IMX 686 sensor coupled with a f/1.9 lens which is not optically stabilized by default takes 16MP good looking snaps in the broad daylight with plenty of details and a high dynamic range, if more details are needed to be preserved there’s always an option to switch to 64MP mode in which dynamic range might take a hit. As the amount of light reduces it tends to struggle due to lack of OIS, but to compensate with this there’s a night mode baked into the camera app which enhances the output (it isn’t as magical as Google’s night sight).

(The upper paragraph is based on the observation with Poco F2 Pro , but the results may vary with K30 ULTRA due to difference in ISP)

Secondary camera consists of a 13MP snapper having 123° field of view coupled with a f/2.4 lens which isn’t optically stabilized either. The remaining 2 cameras consist of a 5MP telephoto macro camera which let’s you get real close to the subject as a entry level microscope does (this is the best macro camera IMO) and the last one is a 2MP depth sensor used for portrait shots.

This camera system lacks a proper zoom lens which was present in previous generation’s K20 PRO.

The selfie shooter or the front camera is a  Motorized pop-up 20 MP camera with a f/2.2 lens.

SOFTWARE

It probably runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 10 which isn’t a stock UI. MIUI has its own unique features but the Ad situation in India isn’t acceptable. At least there won’t be any system ads if it comes under POCO branding. Software remains a personal choice.

BIOMETRICS

As it uses a Amoled display and its 2020, it has a under display fingerprint sensor same as the one found on POCO F2 PRO which is quite a fast one. Even with the pop up mechanism it has support for face unlock (2D).

BATTERY AND CHARGING

It packs in a 4500 mAh battery which sounds a downgrade from POCO F2 PRO which had a 4700 mAh battery. This 4500 mAh battery supports up to 33 Watt charging and yeah! The 33 Watt adapter is included in the box.

BUILD

Having a glass sandwich design with Gorilla Glass 5 on both back and front with a aluminium frame in between. It weighs over 200 grams (213g to be precise). It’s dimensions are 163.3 x 75.4 x 9.1 mm. This isn’t a one hand device.

CONNECTIVITY

It has a dual mode 5G (NSA + SA), WiFi 6, USB type C port and NFC for payments and transfer of files. It has all the basic sensors and has an additional I.R. sensor which can be used to control appliances with Infrared.

MISCELLANEOUS

Talking about audio the earpiece doubles a speaker to provide a stereo effect. It has 3 microphones which are used for audio zoom (something we have seen in Samsung’s flagship devices). If you are thinking to use a sd card to expand storage then you might be disappointed as it has no room for SD card. And as a surprise it has a 3.5mm Headphone jack.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

Pricing… It’s the most highlighting feature about this device. The base Variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage starts from only 1999¥ (~21,554 Indian rupees or 289 USD) and it goes all the way upto 8GB RAM and 512GB Storage costing just 2499¥ (~26,999 Indian rupees or 360 USD ). This pricing is insane, even if Xiaomi or POCO launches it with slight price increase it would sell like hot cakes specially in Indian market.

The Redmi K30 Ultra comes in three colour options – Moonlight White, Midnight Black and Mint Green.
