SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FOLD 2 5G

THE SMARTPHONE OF FUTURE !!!

Samsung recently unveiled the 2nd generation of Galaxy Fold known as Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G (sounds weird right?) in it’s galaxy unpacked event held on 5th August 2020. Keeping the naming aside this phone is a killer device as it brings various improvements over original fold and even Z flip. Let’s discuss about the same in following.

DISPLAY

The major issues faced in original fold were all related to display whether it was the exterior one or the interior one. The outer display was too small to use the device to it’s complete potential and the inner display had durability issues, with Z Fold 2, Samsung has addressed both these issues. Z Fold 2 now packs a large 6.2 inch display on the front (sadly running at only 60Hz) and the inner display has got a major jump in form of Ultra Thin Glass(UTG) display with a slightly larger footprint of 7.6 inch as compared to 7.2 inch of Fold. The ugly notch has been replaced by a hole punch which Samsung calls as “O” notch. Despite all this the main highlighting feature is the high refresh rate of 120Hz on the inner display.

DESIGN

The back design is picked straight out of Note 20 series and placed here. On the side of display the bezels has been reduced to the minimum and the front cameras are placed in “O” notches. Back is made up of Glass giving the Z Fold 2 support for wireless charging. Outer display is made up of Glass whereas inner one is composed of Ultra thin glass (UTG).

CAMERAS

Having total of 5 cameras (2 on each display and 3 on back), it is rumoured that the cameras setup would be identical to the ones found on Note 20 i.e. a 12MP Main camera, 64 MP 3x optical and a 12MP ultrawide sensor, and on the front cameras it’s rumoured to have 10MP shooters.

CONNECTIVITY

As the name suggests this would be a 5G connected device which would be supporting both sub 6G Hz and mm wave 5G. It would be having Wi-Fi 6 onboard.

PROCESSOR

Keeping Z Fold’s 5G connectivity and internals of note 20 series, it’s speculated to have a Snapdragon 865+ processor in all parts of the world.

DURABILITY

Samsung has stated that Z Fold 2 would be more robust than the original Fold and even the inner display is ultra thin glass (UTG) instead of the plastic one. But the real life durability still remains a question.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

As of now there’s no confirmation on pricing, but it’s rumoured to be priced around the 2000$ mark. It would be available for pre order starting from September 1st, 2020 and would be available in 2 color options (Mystic Brown and Mystic Black)

CONCLUSION

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5G, this is the best implementation of a folding screen (Huawei Mate X is not considered as it never made to the global markets). After 2 attempts at foldables Samsung has finally got the right combination with a 6+ inch display on front which makes it easy to use it as a normal smartphone when folded and when unfolded a larger 7.6 inch display can be used as a Tablet (that too having a 120Hz Amoled display). The only question remain is the DURABILITY of the device, which we would come to know only once the reviewers get this device.
